What do I wear to this wedding?
Ok, I’m going to my uncle’s wedding, and I’m VERY confused as to what to wear, since every “wedding attire rule” is being contradicted here…
First of all, its on September 1st - and in this part of the world, that is both summer AND fall. It could be 90 degrees and sunny, or 40 degrees and raining.
Second, the groom is wearing black jeans, and the bride is wearing a cream suit.
Third, the wedding starts at 3 in the afternoon, but the reception & dinner are in the evening (7-ish)
The ceremony and photos are outdoors, the reception and dinner are indoors.
WHAT DO I WEAR?!?!? Help me please…
I’m a more Above Average size, and I want to be sexy and pretty, but not overdressed. And no, I’m not WAY above average - size 16-18.
Mother of the groom - going ‘western’. Mother of the bride, more formal.
I thought of a suit, then a dress, then denim slacks with a blazer, but none of it seems to fit…
Photos helpful. Looking for ideas… PLEASE help!
Wow! So many answers so quickly!
The summer dress thing… I would LOVE to wear a cute summer dress, but… Well, I’ve never really worn one before so I don’t know what to look for! I’m thinking at the knee, to keep it casual…
The slacks are still an option, but I think the polo shirt is just a bit too casual (although very cute!)
Oh, and Rico - Cheryl says I’m not wearing a tuxedo. ![]()
Can anyone post some photos of what you’re thinking of? I’m more of a visual person when it comes to wardrobe, so it would be very helpful.

Spring dress. Take a shawl or light button up sweater with you. You can add sandals or heels to make it more dressy or some slip ons to dress it down.
I would wear a summer dress. It is before Labor day right? It sounds less formal than most, so maybe a cotton type sundress with a jacket would be nice. Something informal, but pretty. What about something like this
A nice pants suit would work for me - can take off the jacket if it gets too hot..
wear a sun dress and if its too cold find a matching sweater that’s what i wore and ppl liky ity lol
Ok since they are going semi casual you can wear a pair of dress slacks and a nice colorful blouse pick something that looks good alone or under a black blazer. You will look nice but not be over dressed. If its hot you can leave off the blazer and if its cool you can wear it. some simple jewlery and a nice hand bag and there you go. Have fun and dont worry too much most ppl wont be watching you that closely anyway. Relax and enjoy.
Im thinking of a cute fun summer dress, spaghetti strap with a light weight sweater of some kind, then bring extra clothes to change into after the photo shoot. Jeans with cute blouse, open to the neck and wear really nice necklace and a blazer for if it is cold. Heels or boots
You should look nice for the photo because otherwise you would look way too casual in pix. Jeans would be great for the reception when you are getting busy on the dance floor.
For the heck of it, since there seems to be little rules on attire, wear a floor length dress! lol!
Try wearing nice black slacks, with this (http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?catId=cat1310002&productId=0378_8379 ) shirt. un button it most of the way and wear a cami under it. try some simple, silver hoops and necklace. For shoes, try black strappy sandals or heels.
This way, you’re not to formal, or too informal…..
You can try out a shirt and skirt instead of a full on dress and get the same effect of a dressed down but still dressy look. Go for a more classy skirt, like black with black polka dots or something with a little lace or flair, and then wear a shirt with that gathered top look in a single color or a non-flashy print. When it gets cooler, simply throw on a cropped sweater.
Don’t be afraid of color, but if you want to go classy you can play the whole black and white theme as long as the black doesn’t go farther than the white.
You can never go wrong with black slacks and a pretty top……. usually a silk one that is colorful (not red or white) and short-sleeved. You can layer with a long black jacket if it is colder. I always think that black slacks with pointy-toed heels and a long jacket has looked very sharp and sophisticated…just remember to try and not make it too black by adding light jewelry (i like simple, silver hoops– not too big), bright makeup (but not flashy) and a colorful top with detail such as sequin, lace or pattern.
Otherwise, I would go with a dress in a pink or a brown and layer that with a black or brown trench coat. If it is on the sunnier side, wear a light brown one, but if it is a little more cloudy, black would look the sharpest. The ideal look is sophistocated and simple, not flashy. Remember, the more simple you make it, the better it will look. I really like to go with simple clothing and beautiful, ornate jewelry.
You can even invest in a great little black dress and brighten it up with colorful shoes and accessories, which looks great this season. Or, go with a colorful dress and black tights and shoes, which is also very “in” this season.
Because the brides parents are dressy and the grooms parents are more casual, you want to strike a fine balance. NO JEANS! I think that even though the parents are wearing it, it is disrespectful if a guest wears it.
Overall, stay comfortable. The best way to do this is to layer. I always go with a short-sleeved top or dress and bring a jacket to put over it. And have fun!
id say go with a nice aline skirt that is a nutural color. Then put a red cami on top(this way if its hot you can just wear the cami, and if its cold you could wear a nice sweater or suit jacket over it.) I Hope this helps you.
examples of this are at this link.(these are found at target.)
You can’t go wrong with a fitted suit, a pretty blouse to go underneath, and a killer (comfortable) pair of heels. A form fitting suit is conservative and versatile - perfect for a special occasion. I would avoid white for obvious reasons. Instead, go for warm fall colors or a beautiful cream, gold, or champagne. Black is making a wonderful transition into the wedding setting so long as you have a splash of color to brighten it up. A suit will be great for any temperature and will be easy to dance in. Don’t forget, accessories make the outfit but less is always more! (This applies to make-up as well…) For a purse you could carry a cute clutch that match your heels and jewelry is the icing on the cake. Speaking of cake, don’t forget to bring some wet-ones. Even if you don’t use them, someone will thank you! Good luck! Relax and have fun!
