Ok, here’s the situation. I asked a good friend of mine who I look at as a sister-from-another-mother to be my maid of honor. She won’t wear a dress or skirt, or anything ultra-girly. She’s girly, but not that much.

So, we’ve compromised with her wearing dressy slacks. My suggestion was for her to wear a separates top from Davids Bridal. When we went to try them on with the other bridesmaids and my friends- she got upset, cried, and said it was too girly, and there were no other options for her.

For her, dressed up for a wedding is a button down shirt and slacks. I told her she needs to wear nicer than that, and we need to find a compromise. Many people have suggested that I make her wear what I want, since I’m the bride- but I don’t feel right doing that, because I respect her for who she is. Other people have suggested that if she’s not comfortable with what I want her to wear, (or I’m not comfortable with her choice of attire) that I should ask someone else to be MoH. Help!
More details- she lives in a state a plane ride away, and I won’t be seeing her again until the weekend of our wedding- next year.

Her mom suggested she could get something made. A friend of hers offered to go shopping with her.

How can we find something that is appropriate, but not too-girly and not too-manly? This has to be the most difficult part of the whole wedding planning!

I don’t want to lose a friend over this, we’ve already discussed this several times, and agreed that she wants to be the maid of honor still, and I want her to do it, but what can I do? I don’t want to be bridezilla and lose a friend, or be so mean as to say she can’t be in it because she can’t wear what I want her to. Plus, it seems like she’s not as into planning and doing stuff as I’d like. She is in school, miles away, younger than me, and very strong-headed!

My other bridesmaids are wearing dresses, but I have no idea what color, because I want to make sure that everything is coordinated a little.
Much of what people are answering is what I hear from my closest girlfriends- many of whom have said they’d step in if I needed them.

However, I’m trying to be respectful of my MoH, and of her and her explanation of “not wanting to compromise herself for others”. I’ve told her I’m not trying to have her do that- but she knows other lesbians who have, and they’ve felt aweful doing it. I’m almost at the point where my head’s going to blow!

Then, if I do ask her not to be in it, and I ask someone else to step in- won’t that offend the other friend that I didn’t ask her in the first place? How do I go about doing that without upsetting MoH #2?
Oh, forgot to mention- she won’t wear heels, wants to cover up her top half, and we’re getting married during the summer- possibly outside.
Uh, more about how mid-way girly she is.

She wants someone to do her hair and makeup (She admits to not knowing how to do it herself)

She won’t wear heals

She does wear jewelry, even a little girly

She has piercings, but they don’t interfere with anything (just another point on the jewelry thing)

She has worn a skirt for other people who threatened her to wear it- and she’s bigger than me, could kick my ass, so not an option there.

I just feel the need to prove her wrong.Then I can look at her and say “What now! Remember when you said I won’t be successful? Who’s laughing now!”
I have joined 9 dating websites since she said I won’t get a husband.I have so many hits.I guess I’m not as unappealing as she made me out to be.I have many hits and I am going on a date next week.
I will prove to her that I can get a man.I’m not going to die some lonely old lady wearing housedresses with a bunch of cats eating on neckbone sandwiches.
I will arrive at that church with a wonderful man on my arm and then I can say “Remember when you said I wouldn’t get a man in my life.Ha Who’s laughing now!”

Does it just drive you more to achieve your goals when people tell you you won’t achieve something?

Who buys the bridesmaid dresses?

Flower girl dress?

Groomsmen attire?

Mothers attire?

Fathers attire?

Is a rehearsal dinner expected? How does that work? After the rehearsal everyone goes out to dinner? Who should be invited? Who pays?

Parents of bride are poor losers. Parents of groom are well off and offer to pay for wedding. Should I let them? If they pay, then should the invitation be reversed (i.e. says they request the attendance…)?

Any other advice?

Back in October I got into it with my so called middle aged friend,Rochelle.Rochelle has this sidekick, a pathetic,bitter,and miserable senior citizen lady named Louise.I wore an unusual dress that sort of resemble’s Galadriel’s dress.She’s a character on Lord of the Rings.Most people like the dress because its unusual and beautiful but Louise and Rochelle made very ignorant comments about the dress.
Rochelle and Louise just always have something negative to say about what I wear and how I wear my hair. Well since that incident I have been blessed with a wonderful boyfriend.My big sister said God is proving her wrong.This boyfriend of mine wants us to get married down the line.My boyfriend likes me how I am.

Lately Rochelle and Louise are still giving me evil stares in choir practice.Louise also watches me.I sit next to my mentor in choir practice and on Sundays and Louise just be all up in me and my mentor’s mouth.And I have seen Louise and Rochelle whispering about me numerous times.I’m 26 years old.I’m too young for them to be picking with me.Rochelle is 51 and Louise is 67.They are too old for this kind of behavior.
How do I ignore them?Its really starting to get to me.I can’t do anything in choir practice without those 2 staring, sneering,and whiserping about me.Its getting to me.How do I ignore them?I even tried rolling my eyes back at Louise and it works for a minute and then she’s right back to giving me evil looks.She eyeballing me like Clint Eastwood does in his old western films.Its so annoying.How do I ignore these 2?

Ok, I’m going to my uncle’s wedding, and I’m VERY confused as to what to wear, since every “wedding attire rule” is being contradicted here…

First of all, its on September 1st - and in this part of the world, that is both summer AND fall. It could be 90 degrees and sunny, or 40 degrees and raining.

Second, the groom is wearing black jeans, and the bride is wearing a cream suit.

Third, the wedding starts at 3 in the afternoon, but the reception & dinner are in the evening (7-ish)

The ceremony and photos are outdoors, the reception and dinner are indoors.

The summer dress thing… I would LOVE to wear a cute summer dress, but… Well, I’ve never really worn one before so I don’t know what to look for! I’m thinking at the knee, to keep it casual…

The slacks are still an option, but I think the polo shirt is just a bit too casual (although very cute!)

Oh, and Rico - Cheryl says I’m not wearing a tuxedo.
Can anyone post some photos of what you’re thinking of? I’m more of a visual person when it comes to wardrobe, so it would be very helpful.

This is a church wedding and the reception is a picnic in the park. They are having a BBQ of hamburgers, hot dogs and brats. I am not obese, but on the heavier side. The mother of the bride is thin and wearing a tea length dress. My stepsons’ mother and I rarely talk, so I don’t know what she has chosen to wear. I really don’t want to wear a dress since it’s an outdoor reception in July (where it could be very humid) and wearing nylons would be uncomfortable for me. The outfit I have found is a pants suit. It has a tank top and flared pants. There is a sheer jacket that has slits up each side and comes down to the knees. I has sequins on it. My delemma is that the pants and top are white or off white and the jacket is a black and white print. Would wearing these colors be inappropriate? I don’t want to stand out since I am the step mother. The fathers of the wedding party are not wearing tuxes. They are just wearing suits of their choice. Can you please advice me.
I appreciate all the advice. Each answer has given me something to think about. I am just the step mother and I don’t have a say so in the attire. The wedding party and family are dressing formal. I agree, that being a picnic reception, it should be light and informal. If the parents are dressing formal, I would be out of place wearing a plain pant suit or sundress. I think I can get by with sandals, but as far as a dress I don’t know. I appreciate the color suggestions.

I told her I thought it would be fine as long as it was dressy enough but the mother of the bride and my other sister are giving her a lot of crap about not wearing a dress, and how inappropriate it woudl be for her to wear pants. What is appropriate. I personally wouldn’t be offended to see a woman in a very dressy pant suit, at a wedding, especially a more mature woman.
